By Ronin Congratulations to Tim Clayton (gold) and Martin Young (bronze)!
Our second-year entry in New Zealand Sanshou was awarded with a gold and a bronze medal in the ‘Below 90kgs’ and ‘Above 90kgs’ category respectively. This year the Blue Wing Honda Auckland Wushu Festival was held on 27-28 May, at Tamaki College Recreation Centre, Glen Innes. The Sanshou (free-style) tournament was held on the second day and consisted of three divisions: children, male and female adults. Bruce Cheng Martial Arts sent a modest entry of two fighters: Sifu Tim Clayton and Martin Young.
For a first-timer, Martin's venture into Sanshou successfully saw him through to the semi-final. There he faced a larger and more experienced fighter. Martin stood his ground as he was pounded with heavy swing punches and two illegitimate knee strikes. The fight ended in the second round as Martin was pushed out several times outside the ring. He lost solely on points, but nevertheless we are proud of his overall achievement and hope he has gained some experience in competitive sports.
As the other half of our team, Tim blasted his way through to the final stage. He fought three credible opponents and was clearly dominating each fight. Tim showed a calculated strategy by waiting for the opportune time to strike while holding his guard. He threw several punches coupled with a string of powerful jabs and kicks. Leaving two of his opponents disoriented and bleeding noses. He also executed a few leg sweeps, and during the semi-final bout he literally picked up and slammed his opponent to the floor; an action which entertained the audience. The judges unanimously awarded Tim with a gold medal, well done!
Fight highlights: In the second round of the semi-final, Tim Clayton (red) hammered his opponent with consecutive jabs, a leg sweep and a vertical body slam. He won the fight and went through to the final bout. |
