1. What is Wing Chun Kuen?
Wing Chun Kuen (詠春拳, Yǒng Chūn Quan, “Everlasting Spring Fist”) is a Southern Chinese martial art that originated in the 17th century. It emphasises on striking, low kicking and two weapon trainings: the Butterfly Swords and the Long Pole. It has an array of simple techniques that have direct applications and highly effective for close-quarter combat or short-range self defense.

2. Is it an effective self defense system?
Yes, it can be a very effective if you train correctly, with discipline and dedication. Wing Chun Kuen was born and developed during a turbulent time in China, and was one of the primary styles used by the Chinese rebel forces against the Manchu armies. Today, it is taught worldwide to civilians as well as the police forces and the military (such as in Taiwan). Wing Chun's centre-line principles, economic movements, energy conservation, relaxation, trapping and touch sensitivity techniques are very refined. When trained and executed properly, they can be effective and lethal.

3. How long will it take to learn the style?
How long is a piece of string? The length of your training time is greatly influenced by your ability and dedication. However, Wing Chun does have less Forms and more concise compilations of techniques compared to other styles of Chinese martial arts.

4. How often must I train in a week?
For beginners we recommend training once or twice a week, and for intermediate students twice or three times a week. Remember that your training at the school should constitute about 40-50% of your actual training time. Practice diligently when you are at home, this is after all kung-fu!

5. What are the costs of joining the school?
Please contact us for a detailed school’s fee using the contact form above.

6. Are there any holidays?
Yes, we are following the NZ school's term so there will be holiday periods in between terms, which normally last for 2 weeks or more. We are also closed during public holidays and regularly post announcements about holidays and class schedules on the website.

7. Are there any holiday training sessions?
Yes, we normally provide a special kicking class for the duration of a holiday period. Normally, the special class will be held twice a week. Please consult with Sifu Cheng in regards to place availability and fee for the special class.

8. Can women and children enrol in the school?
Certainly. Children aged 5+ and women can train in our school at any of the branches. We do have classes specially catered for children at Remuera and Kumeu. For further details please check our Classes page.

9. Do you provide separate classes for children and women?
We do have children-only classes on Mondays, 6.00pm-7.30pm at our Remuera Headquarters, and on Saturdays, 3.30pm-5.00pm at Pakuranga. For address details please check our Classes page. We accept children aged 5 and above, and highly recommend that your child try a class first to see if it is suitable or not. Note that we use a different curriculum for children classes, and we also have children learning at other branches alongside adults, although they would be training only with their own peers. Women train together with men, although they can opt to Chi Sao or spar only with other females.

10. I am a beginner, where and when can l join the school?
You can join us at any time at any of our branches. Wear comfortable sports attire and try one of our classes today. We train barefooted.

11. Do you have a branch near where I live?
Please refer to our Classes page for venue and time.

12. Do you have branches in the South Island?
No, not at this point. Depending on your schedule and interest, we can arrange a place/time for you to train periodically in Auckland, just as we have trained overseas students who came to New Zealand every year.

13. Can I train at the different branches of the school?
Yes, you can train at different branches of our school provided that you pay the fee to each instructor separately. Please notify the instructor where and how many times you are training per week, so that it will be easier for them to gauge your progress.

14. What is your curriculum?
We are following the Lo Man Kam’s Wing Chun Federation curriculum. Beginners would be taught the First Form (小念頭), basic drills, one-arm Chi Sao techniques and their applications. Intermediate students would learn the Second Form (尋橋), plenty of Chi Sao and low kicking sessions. We do a mixture of slow and fast Chi Sao, together with fixed drills. Advanced students would be taught the Third Form (標指), Wooden Dummy, Butterfly Swords and the Long Pole forms.

15. How do I know your lineage is authentic?
We have an authenticated certificate of Sifu Bruce Cheng’s Wing Chun qualification from Lo Man Kam Wing Chun Federation. We also have verified recorded materials of Sifu Cheng’s training under Master Lo Man Kam.

16. How do I know if you are teaching the ‘real’ Wing Chun Kuen?
There are many schools of Wing Chun Kuen and the teacher(s) of each school will add his/her own experiences to this great style. The interpretations, training regimes and expressions of the style can be different from one school to another. In any Wing Chun schools you can observe whether the underlying Wing Chun’s principles are being taught and trained properly. At Bruce Cheng Martial Arts, we have a solid understanding in teaching Wing Chun and an authentic lineage that goes back to early beginnings of the art. The decades of experiences of both Siqong Lo Man Kam and Sifu Bruce Cheng further complement and enrich this effective art.

17. Is Bruce Cheng Martial Arts affiliated with any martial arts or sports organisations?
Yes, we are part of the Lo Man Kam Wing Chun Federation based in Taiwan. We are also informally affiliated with the Hong Kong Wing Chun Athletic Association by lineage and history, although we are independent of their curriculums.

18. Do you accept students who have previously learnt from another Wing Chun school/lineage?
Yes, but we would need to test your knowledge and skills to determine at which level you should start training in our school.

19. Is your Wing Chun proficiency/instructor certificate recognisable worldwide?
Yes, our certificates are recognised worldwide in any Lo Man Kam Wing Chun schools. They are legal documents that can support you when you want to open a branch/school. However, it is a common practice for a different school (regardless of its lineage) to test you on your skills, whether you wish to train or teach in that school. Please consult with your teacher, or Sifu Cheng, regarding your transfer and relocation to another country or school.

20. Are there any exercise equipments to help with my training?
We provide our students with protective vests for full-contact sparrings and mitts for kicking exercises. Advanced students and instructors can train with the Wooden Dummy. Beside these, we use simple physical exercises to train endurance and muscle strength. Students are encouraged to bring their own protective gears for hygiene and practical reason (e.g. mouth guards, shin and knee pads, etc.). Further down the track, we also recommend students to purchase their own Butterfly Swords, Long Poles and (optionally) Wooden Dummies.

21. Are there any supporting materials to help expand my knowledge on Wing Chun?
There are many books, videos and training tools available these days. We recommend you to Google them, buy them at Amazon.com or simply watch them on YouTube.com. Note that not everything your read nor watch are correct and these can not replace your personal training in the class. Ask questions to your instructors and do not deviate from the Wing Chun principles. These should be your compass in walking the path of Wing Chun.

22. Can I combine Wing Chun with any other fighting or martial art styles?
Yes, you can. Although we would strongly recommend that you master one style first (or reach an advanced level) before venturing into another style. Wing Chun is a close-quarter striking style, so it can be complemented nicely with other martial art styles that emphasize on kicking, ground fighting, grappling or throw. No one particular style excels in all aspects of self defense, sport or fighting.

23. I am currently learning another martial arts style, should I stop my current training before joining your school?
We believe that if you have reached an advanced level in your current style, then learning Wing Chun will benefit and complement your existing skills. Otherwise, you will need to decide which style you wish to invest more first. Because to progress in any martial art styles you would need to dedicate ample training time and energy. On a deeper level, your fighting structure, strategy and reflex would rely heavily on your dominant style. You need to investigate if this is detrimental to your learning Wing Chun or not, as everyone is different.

24. I am worried about sustaining injuries, what should I do?
Training sessions are relatively injury-free, although accidents can happen just like in the sports field for example. We recommend investing in a mouth guard and shin pads when you have reached the intermediate level. It is also important to join our warm-up session and never push yourself over the limit. Please inform the main instructor if you have a previous or recurring injury.

25. I have injuries from previous accidents, can I still train?
Please consult with your doctor and Sifu Cheng before you begin training with us. We exempt students with injuries from certain exercises/drills. It is your responsibility to inform the instructor of any disability or injury prior to any training session. We are not liable for injury compensation resulting from incorrect or extreme trainings, especially if previous injuries were not informed. The holiday period is also a good time to rest and heal. Be clear about your goals and conscious about your health.

26. I am over 40 years old, is it too late for me to train?
No, it’s not too late to train Wing Chun even when you are 40 plus years old. When practiced correctly, Wing Chun relies more on sensitivity, relaxation and correct body/energy co-ordination rather than brute strength.

27. Are there any physical or mental pre-requisites to learning Wing Chun?
We view martial suppleness and prowess as the results of correct and dedicated training, not as pre-requisites. If you do have physical challenges, it simply means that you will need to put more efforts and we will work alongside you to achieve a better level of fitness and fighting ability. There is no way for us to determine the state of your mind/heart. But we would ask that you keep an open mind; ready to receive the school’s teachings, as well as to attain a state of mindfulness and courageous heart.

28. Due to my study/work/family commitments I can only train intermittently. What can you recommend me to do?
Organise your schedule so that you can train for a full term. It is better if you can train through 2-3 consecutive terms, especially during your beginner years so that you can lay a strong foundation. Also keep training during your break periods. Alternatively, you can join as many classes per week to create your own intensive course. In most cases an instructor would teach you the next step when you are ready. The teaching method is fluid so you progress through the levels based on your capability, not your class.

29. I live in overseas and am going to visit/work in New Zealand soon. How can I train with your school?
Please contact Sifu Bruce Cheng and discuss with him regarding your schedule and costs. We have accepted and trained a number of students from overseas throughout the years, although most of them already had Wing Chun backgrounds.

30. I’m interested in learning Judo and/or Kendo. What should I do?
Our Judo class is on every Tuesday at Westmere branch, and our Kendo class is on every Friday at Remuera HQ. Please discuss your interest with Sifu Bruce Cheng.
